The park spans across 870 square kilometers of tropical rainforest which consists of waterfalls, rivers, flora and fauna.

Just in case if you’re wondering, the park gets its name from the Endau river which flows from the South from Johor and Rompin river which flows from the North from Pahang into the park.

Endau Rompin is the home for indigenous tribe of Peninsular Malaysia, the largest tribe is known as the Jakun. It is the best place for you to experience their culture and simple way of life in the rainforest.

3. How To Go To Endau Rompin National Park

Entry to Endau Rompin National park requires a four-wheel drive vehicle to be utilized because the roads entering the parks are extremely rough.

There are 3 entrances to enter the park as stated below:

3.1 Selai Entrance via Bekok town, Johor (Recommended)

The Selai entrance is the nearest and easiest route into Endau Rompin National Park via Bekok town, Johor.

This entrance is a new entry developed since 2003. However, this entry is strictly for those who have already booked the trip 3 days in advance via Johor National Park Corporation.

Thus this is the best way to enter Endau Rompin National Park, especially if you are from Johor, Malacca and Singapore. If you happen to come from Kuala Lumpur this is also the entrance to use.  The journey will take about one hour of off-road adventure.

Selai entrance is a more developed infrastructure-wise as there is the Nature & Education Research Center and a Visitor Complex which has complete amenities for your convenience.

3.1.2 How To Get There From Kuala Lumpur or Johor

By Self-Driving

Step 1: take the Exit to Yong Peng, then go through the small town of Chaah, Segamat to another small town of Bekok. It’s about 35-minute drives. For park entry, registration starts at Bekok office.

Step 2: From Bekok town, you will need to drive another 27km through oil palm estate and past several Orang Asli villages such as Kudong, Tembayan, Kemidak, Tamok & Selai.

Step 3: There is another 6km from Kg. Selai to reach Visitor Complex. The journey duration is about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Note: Preferably you will be driving a 4WD as the roads entering the parks are treacherous. If not, then stop by the Park Headquarters and get on the 4WD to venture deeper into the park.

Make sure that this is arranged earlier before arriving. (4WD services will cost around RM200 for Selai Entrance and RM350 for Peta Entrance per unit and can only transport a total of 5 persons.)

By Bus

If you are using the express bus from either Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru, for entry to Selai entrance stop at Yong Peng and take a local bus or taxi to the small town of Bekok.

3.2 Peta Entrance via Kahang town, Johor

The Peta entrance is a traditional route into Endau Rompin National Park via Kahang town, Johor. This entrance is an old entry since 1985 MNS expedition.

It is another way to enter Endau Rompin National Park, especially if you are from Mersing, Kahang and Kluang. If you are interested to use this route, please book 3 days in advance at Johor National Park Endau Rompin (Peta). The trip takes 2 hours journey from Kahang town to Kg. Peta.

Peta entrance is also a well-developed infrastructure and suitable for adventurous ecotourists.

3.2.2 How To Get There From Kuala Lumpur or Johor:

By Self-Driving

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kg. Peta entrance is about 5 hours and Johor Bahru to Kg. Peta entrance is about 3 hours of driving through the main North-South Highway.

Step 1: For park entry via Kg. Peta takes the 244 Exit to Ayer Hitam.

Step 2: As you enter the exit, follow the signs from Kluang to Kahang. From there-on, there will be signs to the Park Headquarters at Kahang before chartering 4WD to the Kg. Peta.

By Bus

If you are using the express bus from either Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru, for entry to Peta entrance stop at Kluang and take a local bus or taxi to the town of Kahang.

By Train

It is recommended to use the train from Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru as it will have a stop at Bekok. For Peta entrance, stop at Kluang and take a local bus or taxi to the town of Kahang.

3.3 Kuala Kinchin Entrance via Kuala Rompin, Pahang

The Kuala Kinchin entrance can be accessed via Kuala Rompin which is a lesser used entry and is not managed by Johor National Parks Corporation.

From the town of Kuala Rompin, drive along the paved road to Selendang. From Selendang there will be a 26km dirt track to the park boundary at Kuala Kinchin.

Selendang is a lesser developed area, with camping grounds and basic amenities which is perfect for those who want more raw nature challenge and experience in Endau Rompin National Park.

4. Attractions In Endau Rompin National Park (Selai Entrance)

To experience Endau Rompin’s many waterfalls, your journey starts from Lubuk Merekek to Lubuk Tapah which consist of muddy road but passable by 4×4 vehicle, the journey alone takes 15mins.

4.1 Takah Pandan Waterfall

Takah Padan is a spectacular vertical waterfall which spans about 50 meters in height. In order to reach Takah Pandan, it takes about an hour of trekking from Selai Base Camp (Lupuk Tapah).

The trek is moderately steep as the trail inclines up steep river banks which can be difficult for someone who is not physically fit.

Still, it is well worth the beautiful view of Takah Pandan Waterfall. Just to the left of the waterfall is probably Takah Selow’s top tier which comes from a different river source. There are ropes secured to the rocky trail to help you up to the waterfall.

4.2 Takah Selow Waterfall

The journey to Takah Selow takes about 20 mins hike from Takah Pandan.

Takah Selow is a unique series of three-tiered waterfall. The first tier of the fall is quite small and not so impressive, but as you progress up to the second tier of the fall, there’s a small pool to dip in.

In order to proceed to the third tier of the fall, precautions need to be taken as the rocks and trail are quite slippery and steep. Therefore, make sure you have suitable footwear. The last tier of Takah Selow is a very calm and relaxing place to have a picnic.

Takah Selow is also the perfect place for landscape photography. Capturing the falls and water flows of Takah Selow in slow speed mode.

4.3 Takah Tinggi Waterfall

Takah Tinggi is the main attraction at Endau Rompin National Park. The waterfall consists of seven tiers but only the lower tier is allowed due to no proper trail leading upwards.

To reach Takah Tinggi, it takes around 2 to 3 hours of tough trekking from Lubuk Tapah. The massive waterfall falls into a large and deep pool which is filled with fish.

However, it is forbidden to fish and swim at Takah Tinggi due to the strong currents and strong waterfall. You can cross the river with assistance from ropes.

There are cases of fatalities due to the negligence of tourist to adhere to the guides advice.

4.4 Takah Berangin Waterfall

Takah Berangin is a powerful almost vertical waterfall with a cool misty pool. It takes about 2 to 4 hours of trekking from Lubuk Tapah. From Takah Pandan, it takes an additional 1 to 1.5 hours through the slightly hilly lowland trail.

As you approach Takah Berangin, from a distance you can hear the powerful water flow sound. After a long trek, the cool misty pool is safe to swim in and provides a nice place to chill off the heat.

Just like the other waterfalls, the pool is filled with fish. The powerful fall of Takah Berangin, produces misty water droplets that make it a welcoming sight.  It is safe to get close to the waterfall.

The river trail leads to Tempa’ang River before reaching Takah Berangin.

4.5 Takah Tempa’ang Waterfall

The least visited waterfall in the park is Takah Tempa’ang. It is along the same river as Takah Berangin.

It is located at the last part of the hike and it’s a great spot for pool diving. The journey is quite tough and makes sure you are quite physically fit as there are lots of ups and downs.

5. Attractions in Endau Rompin National Park (Peta Entrance)

5.1 Buaya Sangkut Waterfall

Buaya Sangkut is a fall with a legend behind it. The waterfall originates from the Jasin River. It is the main attraction of Endau Rompin National Park.

Its heights are made up of ancient volcanic rocks, namely the ignimbrites which shaping the falls till now. The journey requires you to hike three steep hills known as the Samanggong Hills. The journey takes about 4 hours from the Kuala Jasin base camp.

5.2 Tasik Air Biru (Blue Water Lake)

It is located just near the Kuala Jasin base camp, the bright blue clear lake is a perfect stop for a bath after a tiring hike.

The Orang Asli has a myth that whoever swim and bath in the lake will regain youth.

5.3 Upeh Guling Waterfall

It is part of the Jasin River and located downstream of the legendary Buaya Sangkut Waterfall, Upeh Guling is also an interesting visit.

Ancient volcanic rocks are evident at the waterfall. The falls consists of low tier cascades, potholes. It is a great place to have a bath and relax. It’s just a short 15mins hike away from Kuala Marong campsite.

5.4 Endau Rompin’s Arboretum

Endau Rompin has a large arboretum which has many rainforest trees with its species type labelled.

5.5 Nature Education & Research Center (NERC)

NERC Endau Rompin was the result of collaboration and support of the Johor government, Danish Corporation Environment and Development (DANCED) and Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

It is located at Kg. Peta within the National Park Headquarters. It has a dormitory enough for 80 people, library, seminar room and a laboratory. It is a place serves to increase anyone’s awareness of the importance of environmental health.

5.6 Orang Asli Village

Endau Rompin is home to the Orang Asli of the Jakun tribe. By visiting them and experience their unique Orang Asli culture.

Witness and experience how they are able to survive in the tropical jungles. To do that just drop by Kg. Peta which is close to the park’s entry point.

5.7 Endau Rompin National Park Visitor Complex

Located at Kg. Peta, the visitor complex is a place for tourists to stay. It consists of fan dormitories and chalets are available which are available there. (Dorm bed at RM25, Chalet at RM100 to RM150).

5.8 Janing Barat Mountain

Another main attraction is the Janing Barat Mountain which is about 1870ft. It is the perfect place to see the expanse of the Endau Rompin.

At Janing Barat, there is the beautiful fan palm (Livistona Endauensis) and pitcher plants (Nepenthes Ampullaria). It is quite a steep climb and rocky, there are ropes installed to aid climbers.

6. What To Do In Endau Rompin National Park

6.2 Jungle Trekking, Hiking & Mountain Climbing

Some of the best fishing spots at Endau Rompin at Sungai Kinchin and Sungai Kemapan. It is best to come around the month of February to April and from June to August, as it is said to be the fishing season.

7. Where To Stay In Endau Rompin National Park

It can be divided into 2 places to stay in Endau Rompin National Park. It is depends on which entrance you choose for your adventure trip.

Below is the summarize of 2 places accommodations available in Endau Rompin National Park.

7.1 Selai Entrance Accommodations

7.1.1 Main Visitor Complex

The main visitor complex is next to Lubuk Tapah consists of a small multi-purpose hall, a cafeteria, family chalets, standard chalets and dormitories.

There are 4 units of family chalet. It has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a living room and kitchen. It has two floors, the master bedroom is in the first floor while the two single bedroom is on the second floor. It fits 4 persons and costs RM200 per night.

There are 4 units of standard chalet which has fan. It has two single bedroom and a bathroom. It fits two person and costs RM120 per night.

The dormitory has two blocks, block A & B. Each block can accommodate 40 people. It is equipped with double-decker beds, metal lockers and ceiling fan. It has shared bathroom, prayer room and cooking area.

Pricings are Malaysian RM20/person (adult), RM10/person (student). Non-Malaysian RM30/person (adult), RM20/person (student).

7.1.2 Lubuk Tapah

There are 20 units of cabin hut. Each is with a sleeping platform, 2 large mattresses, 3 pillows and wall fan. It has public bathrooms, cooking area and dining area and toilets. It costs RM80 per night and fits 3 persons.

Fishing is not allowed and campfire is prohibited at this area. Electricity is provided by generator start from 7:00am to 7:00pm. You need to hire a guide even though you want overnight only.

7.1.3 Lubuk Merekek

The camping site can camp 200 persons at one time. It has all the necessities for a camping site including basic toilet, bathing place and cooking area. Pricing are Malaysian RM5/person (adult), RM3/person (student) and non-Malaysian RM10/person (adult/student).

Fishing is allowed at this area and camp fire is allowed under supervision by a guide. It is compulsory to have a guide even though you want to camping only. Electricity is not provided by they have generator for rent.

7.2 Peta Entrance Accommodations

Peta is well equipped with infrastructure and facilities include visitor complex, family chalets, standard chalets, dormitories, prayer room, Nature Education & Research Center (NERC), boat jetty and suspension bridge.

The places that you can camp are at Kuala Jasin, Pantai Burung, Kuala Marong, and Batu Hampar and at Upeh Guling. It is recommended that you bring a lightweight tent for your convenience.

But there are A-frames provided at the camping site where you can set up a large tent using canvas. Just cover the ground with a sheet. Make sure to have a sleeping bag and ample mosquito coils though.

7.2.1 Visitor Complex

It houses park headquarters, library, meeting room, information gallery, briefing center, cafeteria and a multi-purpose hall.

There are 6 units of the three-room family chalet with 5 bedrooms each with en-suite bathroom. It is cost around RM150/night. Besides that, there are also 15 units of fan-cooled standard chalet which provides a queen-size bed or 2 single beds each. Price is RM100/night.

The cheap place to stay at Kg. Peta will be two-level of dormitory with 74 beds equipped with fan and cost RM25/night. It is just behind the Visitor Complex Peta. The toilets and showers room are next to the building.

7.2.2 Nature Education & Research Center (NERC)

NERC has a mini library, a computer lab, tubing facilities, activity hall, seminar room and dormitory which can accommodate up to 80 people. It is about 10 minutes boat ride from Kg. Peta.

7.2.3 Pantai Burung Campsite

Pantai Burung campsite is located just near Kg. Peta. It’s just about 10 minute walk away from Visitor Complex.

It is equipped with simple toilets, showers and an area to cook. It’s a good area to camp for those who want to spend time just nearby the area with camping capacity of 100 persons.

7.2.4 Kuala Jasin Campsite

Kuala Jasin is the main base camp at Endau Rompin, most of the trailheads start from here. Camping grounds, gazebo and multi-purpose hall are provided at Kuala Jasin.

It is most well-equipped campsite with electricity supplied as well as direct road access to the site. The campsite has 3 units of the three-room chalet with 5 bedrooms each, 10 units of standard chalet with 2 single beds each and camping capacity of 90 persons.

You can go to Kuala Jasin from Kg. Peta via a boat ride (RM22 per person) which will take 45mins. Besides that, you also can walk the 15km trail which might take around 2 hours.

7.2.5 Kuala Marong Campsite

It is 45mins boat ride from Kg. Peta + 90mins trek from Kuala Jasin Campsite with camping capacity of 30 persons. At Kuala Marong, it has a campsite, cooking area, basic toilet and gazebo.

The Upeh Guling waterfall is just a 30 minutes hike-away from Kuala Marong.

1. Tasik Air Biru -> 0.5km
2. Upeh Guling Waterfall -> 0.5km
3. Batu Hampar -> 3.0km
4. Buaya Sangkut Waterfall ->5.5km

7.2.6 Batu Hampar Campsite

Batu Hampar campsite is another 40 minute gentle hike from Upeh Guling or 90 minutes trek from Kuala Marong Campsite with camping capacity of 30 persons.

As you hike the trail, huge palms and dipterocarp trees cover your journey. The path is quite faint and only hike with a guide.

All campsites mentioned above have a basic toilet, cubicle shower facilities with bucket, pail and tap and cooking area.

8. Best Time to Visit Endau Rompin National Park

The best time to visit Endau Rompin National Park is from April to October in which the weather is hot and humid.

The park will be closed during the monsoon season which is estimated to be from November to March due to rainy season causing the park to be almost inaccessible through roads and flooded rivers.

11. Don’ts at Endau Rompin National Park

Endau Rompin National Park is a special protected reserve with a rich heritage. Listed below are don’ts which are to be taken note during your stay at the park:

• Do not throw rubbish, take only photos and leave only footprints
• Do not be noisy, as this will scare and stress the wildlife. It might attract unwanted attention

12. Useful Tips For Endau Rompin National Park Trip

• Make sure to prepare a good quality bag so that your belongings are protected throughout the trip. It doesn’t have to be too expensive.
• For comfort, you can bring your own comforter or a cheap foam pad. Bring along your sleeping bag.
• Carry a can of corned beef which has all the protein and fat that you need for all those hard trekking.
• Camps are provided in the package. But if you want to bring your own personal lightweight camp then that will be a plus.
• Make sure you bring food that gives you energy, such as power bar, chocolates, sugar sweets and snack regularly to keep your energy level high.
• Keep hydrated as it will be quite a long hike from one place to another. Do not wait untill you’re thirsty to stop for a drink. Bring at least two bottles of water.
• It is important to bring mosquito repellent and also mosquito coils.
• Bring some salt + water + oil mixture in a bottle to keep the leeches away, another way is to use special leech repelling socks.
• Respect and always listen to your guide before doing anything. Learn as much as possible about the park from them.
• Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints.
